Enrolment conditions for foreigners

A foreigner is a person who is not a Polish citizen.

Note that candidates who have Polish citizenship and citizenship of another country have to apply for enrolment on the terms for Polish citizens.

Foreigners may be enrolled on the terms for Polish citizens if they meet at least one of the following requirements:

1) they have a valid Polish Nationality Card (Karta Polaka);

2) they have a permanent residence permit;

3) they have a refugee status conferred by the Republic of Poland;

4) they are beneficiaries of temporary protection on the territory of the Republic of Poland;

5) they are migrant employees who are citizens of a European Union member state, Swiss Confederation or a European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member state – a party to the European Trade Area agreement, or are family members of such persons if they reside within the Republic of Poland;

6) they hold a European Union long term residence permit within the Republic of Poland;

7) they have a temporary residence permit issued  on the territory of the Republic of Poland in connection with the circumstances described in art 127, art. 159, s.1 or art. 186 s. 1.3 or 1.4 of the act concerning foreigners of 12 Dec. 2013 (State Journal of Law - Dz.U. no 1650);

8) they have been granted subsidiary protection on the territory of the Republic of Poland;

9) they are citizens of a European Union member state, or a European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member state  – a party to the European Trade Area agreement, or  Swiss Confederation, or are family members of such persons if they have the right of permanent residence in the Republic of Poland.

Foreigners who:

1) do not fulfil any of the foregoing conditions;

2) citizens of a European Union member state, Swiss Confederation or a European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member state – a party to the European Trade Area agreement and their family members who have decided to commence education in Poland on the terms for non EU state citizens;

3) Persons with a valid Polish Nationality Card (Karta Polaka) who have waived the right to enrol on the terms for Polish citizens,

may commence and continue education on different terms than those for Polish citizens.

Foreigners who hold a residence permit with a concession: ‘access to labour market’ or a Schengen visa or a Polish visa issued for employment reasons on the territory of the Republic of Poland may commence and continue higher education exclusively on a paid basis.

Foreigners enrolling on the terms for Polish citizens are obliged:

1) to complete electronic registration in the tab eCandidate (eKandydat). Should there be problems with electronic registration, kindly contact the Department of Education and Student Affairs of PPWSZ (tel. 18 26 10 712; e-mail: dn@ppwsz.edu.pl). Download: enrolment form;

2) to submit required enrolment documents;

3) pass an additional entrance examination in hand drawing (candidates for the faculty of architecture only).

Foreigners enrolling on other terms than Polish citizens:

Foreigners who wish to enrol on other terms than Polish citizens (without any qualifying procedure) on the basis of the decision of the Rector of PPWSZ, submit the following qualifying documents in the Department of Education and Student Affairs of PPWSZ:

  1. completed enrolment form (in English / in Russian);
  2. original secondary school final certificate or another document giving them the right to apply for enrolment at first-cycle higher studies with its authorised translation into Polish made by a Polish sworn translator (the certificate must make it clear that it gives the graduate the right to apply for enrolment at all kinds of higher education institutions in the country where the certificate was issued; should the certificate contain no such information, it must be submitted as a separate confirming document);
  3. original diploma of completion of higher studies abroad that would give the graduate the right to apply for enrolment at second-cycle higher studies with its authorised translation into Polish made by a Polish sworn translator (should the candidate wish to enrol at second-cycle studies);
  4. photocopy of the photo page of the candidate’s passport (the original document to be presented on request);
  5. proof of knowledge of the Polish language i.e. confirmation of completion of a one year’s preparatory course for studies in the Polish language in the schools designated by the Minister of Education or certificate of knowledge of the Polish language issued by Państwowa Komisja Poświadczania Znajomości Języka Polskiego jako Obcego (State Certifying Committee of Knowledge of the Polish Language as a Foreign Language) or a document issued by PPWSZ to confirm that the candidate possesses a knowledge of the Polish language sufficient to study in this language;
  6. visa or another document or title to stay on the territory of the Republic of Poland;
  7. medical certificate issued by an occupational health doctor to  confirm that there are no health contraindications to enrol in PPWSZ in the selected faculty and form of education;
  8. document to  confirm the candidate’s entitlement to national  health insurance in the Republic of Poland i.e. health insurance policy for the duration of education in the Polish Republic or European Health Insurance Card or statement that the candidate intends to obtain the Polish National Health Fund insurance immediately on enrolment in PPWSZ;
  9. one current photograph (35 x 34 mm) in the format required for Polish Identity Documents, signed with full name and surname on the other side of the photograph;
  10. digital photograph.

Secondary school final certificates (except for IB and EB diplomas) and higher studies graduation diplomas obtained abroad must be:

  • accompanied by a Clause of Appostille, if the issuing country is a signatory state of the Hague Convention of 5 Oct. 1961 aabolishing the requirement of legalisation of  foreign public documents (State Journal of Law of 2005, no 112, s. 938 (list of signatory states of the Hague Convention) or

A confirmation from PPWSZ that the candidate’s knowledge of the Polish language is sufficient to take up a course of studies in the Polish language is issued on the basis of a qualifying interview in the Department of Education and Student Affairs or it is a confirmation of completion of a Polish language course for foreigners organised at PPWSZ.

Documents must be submitted in the Department of Education and Student Affairs of PPWSZ

Candidates who possess a secondary school final certificate obtained abroad, which is not an IB or EB diploma, issued in a country with which Poland has no agreement on mutual recognition of documents, should additionally submit:

  • proof of validation of foreign studies issued by Małopolski Kurator Oświaty (Małopolska School Board) or the school board appropriate for the applicant’s residence in Poland;
  • or a candidate’s written statement wherein the candidate undertakes to complete the validation procedure by the end of the first semester on pain of expulsion.

The secondary school final certificates obtained in the countries with which the Republic of Poland has a signed bilateral agreement concerning mutual recognition of documents confirming education (list of international agreements).
